How To Practice Mindfulness Each and Every Day

Can savoring every bite really make you happier?
Can you find a little bit of joy in each and every day?
What is mindfulness and why should you care?

Here are things you might here: Savor every bite. Turn folding laundry into an experience of gratitude. Washing dishes can be a transcendent experience...Really?

Just about everyone is talking about how to live a mindful life. But what does that mean...and why should you care...

But what is it really?  Simply, mindfulness is the habit of giving attention consciously to things going on around you; it is being aware of all the things you do every day, like eating, breathing, speaking, moving.

You might have noticed that the word ‘mindfulness’ is quite ‘in’ at the moment; very trendy.

But what is it really?  Simply, mindfulness is the habit of giving attention consciously to things going on around you; it is being aware of all the things you do every day, like eating, breathing, speaking, moving.

By being more mindful of the things we do everyday, we slow down and we appreciate the little things more. Life after all is made up a parade of little things - only rarely do we go on the vacation of the lifetime, have a 5-star meal, get a raise, or win a prize.  If we live for only the "Big" things, we're depriving ourselves of opportunities each and every day to create happiness and contentment for the things that do happen to us.

How can you practice mindfulness? Here are a few ways you can incorporate mindfulness into your everyday life.  None of them take a long time, and they're all enjoyable!

  • Savor your meals. It is a good idea to focus on your chewing while you are eating. Put your phone aside, turn off the television and really look down at your meal, noticing what food it is, and enjoying all the bites. You will not only help your digestive system, but you will also be aware of your current actions and appreciate the food you are putting into your mouth.

  • Soothe your soul: Beautiful soothing melodies can relax you when you really listen. Lie down or sit in a comfortable place and position and then close your eyes, allowing the music into your soul. Soothing melodies clear the mind and thoughts after stressful moments and days.

  • Read a book: Reading takes a lot of focusing and can transport you into wonderful places; it allows you to meet wonderful people, it relaxes your mind and body as well. Books pass on useful knowledge and help you to meditate too. As you go throughout the words, you are actually practicing mindfulness at the same time.  Read fiction or non-fiction, just pick something engaging. Also, give it some time - it can take a while for a book to draw us in. And - try a real book, not an ebook. Without the distraction of emails or notifications, you allow the story to really unfold.

  • Take a walk: It doesn't have to be a long one, and it doesn't have to be for exercise. Even a walk around the block or the work parking lot at lunchtime can do wonders for clearing your mind. Tip  -- don't plug into music or podcast. Let the sounds of nature be your soundtrack.

  •  Switch off devices: Every once in a while, switch off your devices that you are so ‘linked to’ and engage with the world around you, the beautiful nature around you. Talk to somebody without cell-phone in hand; have a meaningful conversation with someone. You will find you feel much more productive after just a small break away.

  • Let your hair down a bit and laugh! When you laugh, you release endorphins and this brings in more energy and oxygen into your body, improving your immune system. Humor in life invites more oxygen and energy into your body. When you are laughing you are laughing at something; you are enjoying something. Being present in the situation is the key to mindfulness.

  • Keep a journal  - This is probably one of our favorites at La Belle Vie Journal  for obvious reasons, but journaling has some many benefits. You can use your journal for rants or stream of consciousness. Get those thoughts, worries and anxieties out! Or you can use it to track the nice things that happened to you. It can be as simple as jotting three things you're grateful for.

Remember - don't stress out about being mindful. Trying to all of these things every day might just make you even more stressed. One of them might be all you need - or different days might call for a different technique.
