They are happy, flexible, mentally sound and content. But what have kept these people going for so long – are there pillars of longevity? Or are they just lucky to have reached a good old age? Maybe it is because of their genes.

 

Healthier lifestyles along with excellent strides in the medical field have enabled many people in the USA to live longer lives.  However, there are some people who live way past the expected lifespan years of 81 for women and 76 for men. Strong genes are important, they go a long way.

 

What are the pillars of healthy aging?

Researchers have traveled all over the world to find some really old people – to find out what were the factors that allowed them to reach their golden years, still all ‘put together’. They also wanted to examine the kind of environment they lived in. 

One author, Buettner, who wrote a book, Blue Zones, studied a place in Greece called Ikaria. This is an 88 square mile island which is situated just 30 miles off the Turkey coast. In his book, he wanted to shed light on the people who lived there, their values and their habits.

He found that on this island, there are ten times as many siblings who live on Ikaria who are over the age of 90 compared to any other places across Europe. What they discovered, in their research, was that the people who lived there, the Ikarians, seemed to have far fewer incidents of cancer, depression, and dementia as well as cardiovascular disease than other parts of Europe.

What they noticed with the Ikarians was that they lived the Mediterranean diet way of eating, very healthy, filled with vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts, beans, healthy fats, and fish and sea types. Then they noticed that the habits and values of the Ikaria people were also observed in four other parts of Europe as well, namely Sardinia in Italy, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Loma Linda in California and Okinawa in Japan.

 

 

From this study, the authors defined key pillars of longevity:

 

 

  1. A high rate of moderate physical activity - this means walking!
  2. Low stress
  3. Eating nutrient dense foods
  4. Strong Connection to Family and Friends
  5. Faith, coupled with everyday joy in the life
  6. Optimistic Mind Set
  7. Have a Purpose in Life

Making sure the kids do their homework and get to where they need to be. Or making sure the bills are getting paid on time. Or binge watching my favorite show.

Or cooking a big family dinner on Sunday. I think the real question - and answer - people wants to know is how to get it done and seem entirely stressed and crazy. Have I stopped sleeping?

Nope, I get plenty of that. Do I not watch Netflix? Nope - hello Season Three of Stranger Things. Do I work 20 hours a day? Nope - I read, I exercise, I cook, I clean, and hang out with my kids, I stop over at a friend's for a chat and cup of coffee. Nope - I get what needs to be done and still have a life.

BUT, it wasn't always this way. I wasn't always this way. I was stressed, crazy busy, short tempered and all over the place. It was affecting my work, my family, my health. I found myself unmotivated. I even stopped writing for awhile. I tried so many different things to get my life back "under-control".

Things like:

Ruthlessly scheduling my time down to the minute, which just made me more stressed

Meal Prep one day a week to have little tupperware containers ready to rest of the week. Chopping sucks and taking the fun out of cooking and just wasn't for me.

Getting up super early before my kids to cram in a workout, an hour or two of work, plus unloading the dishwasher and folding laundry. Guess what, I am not a morning person and it showed. I was mean and tired and ready for bed at 4 PM, right in the middle of homework time .
